LILIAN GISH

Lillian Diana de Guiche (Springfield, Ohio, 14 de outubro de 1893 — Nova Iorque, 27 de fevereiro de 1993) foi uma famosa atriz norte-americana indicada ao Oscar, mais conhecida como Lillian Gish. Protagonizou clássicos como O nascimento de uma nação (1915) e Intolerance (1916), ambos de D. W. Griffith.

Símbolo da beleza frágil das heroínas do cinema mudo, LILLIAN GISH  impôs um estilo de representação baseado em gestos e olhares delicados, realçando uma luminosa máscara de inocência e rompendo com a teatralidade forçada da maioria dos atores do silencioso. Filha de um alcoólatra irrecuperável, desde os cinco anos de idade atuava em teatros provincianos para sobreviver, ao lado da mãe e da irmã mais nova, Dorothy. Anos depois, em Nova York, trabalhando na companhia teatral de David Belasco com sua inseparável irmã, conheceu Mary Pickford, que a recomendou ao todo poderoso David W. Griffith, da Companhia Biograph. Em 1912, contratadas por ele, as irmãs Gish protagonizaram "O Inimigo Invisível / An Unseen Enemy" (1912), o primeiro título de muitos que fariam com o célebre diretor. A atriz estabeleceu uma imediata e fértil parceria artística com o cineasta, tornando-se sua principal estrela e exercendo influência sobre os roteiros e a direção de suas obras. Juntos fizeram trabalhos importantes como "Judith de Betúlia / Judith of Bethulia" (1914), "O Nascimento de uma Nação / The Birth of a Nation" (1915), "Intolerância / Intolerance: Love’s Struggle Throughout the Ages" (1916), "Corações da Humanidade / Hearts of the World" (1918), "Lírio Partido / Broken Blossoms or the Yellow Man and the Girl" (1919) e "Orfãs da Tempestade / Orphans of the Storm" (1921).

Faleceu em 27 de fevereiro de 1993 antes de completar 100 anos. Encontra-se sepultada em Saint Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, Manhattan, Condado de Nova Iorque, Nova Iorque nos Estados Unidos.
